讲座题目:Transformations to sustainability and ecological civilisation: Opportunities for collaborative international research towards the Global Goals

主讲人: Adrian El

主讲人简介:Dr. Adrian Ely is a Senior Lecturer at SPRU - Science Policy Research Unit at the University of Sussex and Deputy Director of the ESRC STEPS Centre.  He leads the ISSC 'Pathways' Transformative Knowledge Network, a collaborative effort across 8 countries that aims to foster transformations to sustainability in agriculture, energy and urbanisation. His research has focused in particular on international, trans-disciplinary studies of the regulation and governance of emerging biotechnologies, for example co-authoring the book Regulating Technology: International harmonisation and local realities in 2010 and working with Chinese colleagues to understand the governance of genetically-modified food and crops, and stem cell technologies.  He has been working with colleagues at BNU-SSDPP for 10 years, most recently in helping to establish the STEPS Sustainability hub in China.

讲座内容: The world faces unprecedented social, political and environmental challenges.  The United Nations Global Goals (Sustainable Development Goals) are aiming to respond to these challenges in a coordinated way, putting forward targets that apply universally to rich and poor countries alike.  In many cases, they require transformations of social and technological systems that will disrupt existing power relations and vested interests. Social science and policy research has a vital role to play in understanding these kinds of transformations, and guiding them in ways that respond not only to global imperatives but also national and local needs.  In this presentation, Adrian Ely will present the work of the 'Pathways to Sustainability' global consortium, of which BNU-SSDPP hosts the China hub.  Across 8 countries in 4 continents, the consortium is investigating transformations to sustainability in energy, agri-food and water-waste systems.  Adrian will describe some of the transdisciplinary work that is underway and explore opportunities for Chinese collaborators.  In particular, he will reflect on the contribution that China's approaches to 'ecological civilization' can make to the shared 2030 agenda.
