Making money and taking care of children— Case study of work-family balance in Beijing

Nowadays people are pursuiting higher quality of life since their basic material needs are satisfied. They are wondering whether the work system can help them maintain work-family balance. Considerations for work-family balance weighs more than the professional interest when people choose between job options. The choice of job and work efficiency is also influenced by opinions of one’s family members. The marketization of public services in China makes lots of families, especially the poor ones unable to purchase service to maintain work-family balance. Family members have to take the responsibilities of both family care and economic provision. This study seeks to understand how ordinary families balance work and domestic care and what kind of support they may expect from enterprise and government.
