From November 3 to 6, 2023, the 9th International Symposium on Environmental Sociology in East Asia was held at Kanto Gakuin University, Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. With the title of “East Asian Uniqueness and Diversity of Environmental Sociology: ISESEA’s 15-year Achievements and Dissemination to the World”, the event discussed the uniqueness and diversity of environmental sociology in East Asia based on the studies over the years by comparing with the west world.

The seminar covers multiple cutting-edge and hot topics, including theory and practice, climate change, fair transformation, pollution and environmental governance, energy and environment, social organization and environment, business and environment, human behavior and environment, gender and environment, etc. Over a hundred experts and scholars from China, Japan and South Korea were present at the event, mainly from Beijing Normal University, Nanjing University, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Hohai University, National Taiwan University, National Chengchi University, National Sun Yat-sen University, Waseda University, Nagasaki University, Hosei University, Meiji University, Hokkaido University, Kumamoto University, Fukuoka Institute of Technology, Hanshin University, University of Leeds, University of Amsterdam, etc.

Zhang Bingyi, a Ph.D candidate of SSDPP enrolled in 2022, attended the event and delivered an academic report titled "Hidden Dimensions of Justice in the Green Transformation of China's Coal Industry" in Parallel Forum 2: "Energy and Environment", which received positive responses from participating experts. The conference moderators Professor Ku Dowan and Professor Catherine Mei Ling Wong provided valuable advice. The relevant scholars from National Taiwan University, National Sun Yat-sen University and Kumamoto University offered academic viewpoints from multiple perspectives and levels, which are helpful for Zhang Bingyi's further study.

The seminar has, Zhang Bingyi said, not only deepened her understanding of East Asian environmental sociology, Chinese local sociology research, and social policies related to vulnerable groups, but also broadened her research perspective on Chinese sociology and social policies. Moreover, she's got a more in-depth understanding of the differences and connections between East Asian academic discourse systems and Eastern and Western academic discourse systems, as well as the social responsibility that students majoring in public management shoulder.
